In the World according to Ralph, shutting down Parliament is a flagrant admission that our soldiers committed war crimes. In the upcoming days and weeks, thousands of athletes, dignitaries, diplomats, and civilians from countries all over the world will be landing in Canada and staying in our hotels. What we really need is for them to flip on the TV in the afternoon to watch Bob Rae in Question Period accusing our soldiers of war crimes. That would be fantastic, and a great way to increase our standing in the world when the world is coming to visit. Do I really want the delegation from Norway watching Jack Layton scream on TV when they walk off the tarmac?
Don't get me wrong, as one of the 9 people in Canada who actually watches Question Period (albeit often in mute) I am devastated that I won't get my next fix until March. As a political junkie I would prefer Parliament sit as much as possible, but as I wrote on Christmas Eve, I have no objection to going prorogue given this set of circumstances. To be totally honest, as a Canadian I often find QP embarrassing. If there are thousands of important people from across the planet staying in our hotels, I am strangely comfortable with them turning on the CBC and not watching our politicians makes asses of themselves. As someone who lives in the riding that will be hosting half of the events, I would like my MP John Weston to stay in West Vancouver--Sunshine Coast--Sea to Sky Country for the next 2 months. He has lots of work to do.
I also hope that our Minister of Justice is working on the Yes Men file. Guaranteed they have already bought their plane tickets to Vancouver, assuming they don’t ride their bicycles.
And I most certainly have not approved of the manner in which the Liberal Party exploited their Senate majority as a hostile filibuster. I look forward to them losing that tactical advantage.
ReplyDeleteCan I prorogue my job too? I could really use a 3 month vacation as well. I also have this friend who is at risk of getting fired: can she just tell her boss to put things on hold for a few months?
ReplyDeleteOr how about my taxes? The Conservatives don't seem too concerned about the millions of now wasted taxpayer dollars on putting over 30 bills through Parliament and committee now for the third or even fourth time. As long as it gives them some political advantage, eh?
Democracy? We will have our democracy when King Harper sees fit to dole it out!!

Of course, what Goodale conveniently overlooks is that the prisoner transfer agreement that facilitated any torture of detainees handed over by Canadian soldiers was negotiated by his party. By the government in which he was a senior member, no less.

Certainly, mistakes were made, by this government and by the previous government. The difference seems to be that the former government is trying like hell to tar this government with their mistakes, while this government understandably does what it can to avoid being unfairly tarred.

Certainly, mistakes were made, by this government and by the previous government. The difference seems to be that the current government is seriously undermining our democratic institutions in trying like hell to avoid accountability for their mistakes.
The liberal hatred of our military heritage is due to Trudeau's avoidance of duty to his country during World War 2. While my father and uncles were overseas fighting for this country's freedom, where was the great hero of the Liberal Party?

When I read Goodale's comment that the prorogue of Parliament was "an insult to democracy", I almost spit my Cheerios out. I guess Ralph didn't think it would be too insulting to form a coalition with separatists, and try to claim power through the back door, when his party didn't like the results of a democratic election. I think that Ralph is just miffed that he won't be able to sit in The House Of Commons and yell "shame" repeatedly until March.

I am furious! I'm not sure why I am furious, but when I see my brave Xena Warrior Princess Libby Davies rocking her lips of fury, I am placed into a hypnotic trance of moral outrage. I can't say that I am upset to see the Conservatives pissing on Democracy. Marxism and Democracy go together like peanuts and motor oil.

And all of those bills can be re-introduced EXACTLY where they were on the order paper so long as the oppo gives consent.
As for whether or not your friend can prorogue, well do they get a cushy government sector union job ?
Memory serves that its NDP types who got mad when the gov't tried to take the axe to some of those benefits last fall.
I would like to know how Harper knew that the governor general would go along with a second prorogue. It was a big risk.
ReplyDeleteNot a happy moment for democracy. Still after the death of four more soldiers in Afghanistan I won't miss the inquiry into Afghan detainee abuse that we supposedly acquiesced in.
I have not seen the interviews with either Mr. Rae or Mr. Goodale, but if they both said, or seriously implied, that parliament was prorogued to cover up war crimes by Canadian troops then this puts the lie (nothing new) to everything the Liberals have said about supporting our troops. The Iggomaniac has insisted many times that his attacks are on the government's ignoring warnings about prisoner abuse. He claims that he is not attacking the troops per se but only the Tories handling of the situation, even though it was the Conservatives who patched many of the holes in the Liberal agreement with Afghanistan.

(Not an unusual occurrence.) It also demonstrates that the Liberals have plumbed new depths of depravity that even I, who feels there are few levels to which they will not sink, am dumbfounded by.
