I ask the question, who is the top woman of 2009? I endorse Aung San Suu Kyi as both my woman of the year and my woman of the decade, but we may as well put it to a vote. Everybody needs to read the book Letters From Burma. I would like to take nominations before I launch the poll, just incase I am forgetting anyone, which I'm sure I am. Who is that lady in Iran that fights for human rights? She should be in this poll.

ReplyDeleteSmith's ascension to leadership and rising to the top of the polls is nice, HOWEVER, didn't Iggy do the same thing this year ? Which is why I say we shouldn't celebrate her until she actually wins.
ReplyDeleteThere is a woman in Iran who was shot to death named Neda I believe. The video of her dying went viral and came to encapsulate the struggle of the reform movement in Iran.
Palin's book is wonderful so far! For that reason alone i'd say she gets my vote.
Also, Condoleeza Rice played a significant role in the Bush administration.

Oh right, Aung San Suu Kyi being imprisoned for championing Democracy does not stack up against Palin writing a book. Sarah Palin and her massive accumulation of experience certainly vaults her ahead of one of the greatest heroes in the history of Democracy. Good call.

Perhaps you should rephrase this to "most dedicated freedom fighter who is female".
Because otherwise being the most successful author in a genre, EVER, is kind of a big deal to those of us who are literature junkies.
Yeah as soon as i saw Aung San Suu Kyi up there i had to vote for her.I like mrs palin,but Aung is on the front lines,facing potential persecution every day.

A best selling book for 5 weeks certainly tops 20 years of house arrest for fighting for democracy. Perhaps I should have titled the poll "top female author of the last 5 weeks"?

ReplyDeleteAgain, is the poll about 2009 or the last 20 years? Because Palin's record breaking success in the literary world happened completely in 2009, not over a period of 20 years.
I guess the question is what has Aung San Suu Kyi done SPECIFICALLY in THIS YEAR ? If we're going for freedom fighting in '09 I would rather support one of the women active in Iran right now because its a current, 2009 event.
Because had I known we were allowed to nominate on going success for things that happened years ago I will switch my vote to Mary, mother of God.
Thanks for asking, I was actually planning on making this the subject of my next blog post. Originally I was going to make the poll question woman of the decade in which Suu Kyi would have been the hands down choice. I only changed it to the woman of 2009 because I WANTED to include Palin in the poll. Why would I want to include Palin in the poll if I keep insisting her accomplishments are drastically overrated? Excellent question.
