The Most Outrageous Facebook Groups?

I have decided to do a little "investigative journalism" to examine the vessel of the grassroots groundswell movement of political activism. There is a serious movement afoot to "walk a little faster or get the f&*k out of my way" which has 650,000 members. Clearly with that level of grassroots support, this should be a story on CBC news. Walk faster people, or 650,000 people will be outraged!

My favourite is the lady who promises to name her kid Megatron. In fact, I have been seriously considering naming my first born Optimus Prime. Megatron was evil. Some of the more interesting Facebook Groups that I have are listed below. Might as well put this in a webpoll...

When I'm super bored, I go on Facebook and join tons of pointless groups 161,000 members

CAN YOU LIKE, WALK A LITTLE FASTER OR GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY?! 650,000 members

Petition BAN HOMEWORK! 1.3 million members

If 1 Million People Join My Dad Will not Put Our Dog to sleep 1.4 million members

I am Canadian, therefore, I live in an igloo and ride polar bears to school 63,000 members

Laura will name her baby Megatron if 100,000 people join this group! 101,000 members

I'm bored therefore I'm hungry 95,000 members

  1. It's an absolute travesty that the Shooter McGavin fan club only has 2,305 members. It's at least important as Laura naming her baby Megatron.

  2. Any news as to whether Laura named her baby Megatron? I see the number is higher than the goal...

I personally prefer this one, with 124,277 members:

  5. Is it possible that this is all bogus? Is it possible to rig these results? Kind of like the "Thumbs up, Thumbs down" voting you can do on Comment Sections".

After all, would we expect any thing but lieing and cheating from these leftist quacks.

  6. We should encourage our opponents online stunts. It only reinforces the inability of them to mount a real threat or Call to Action.

Let the PJ revolution, have their virtual marches, and virtual protests.

The <25 demographic has been a significant force in Canadian elections since...

  7. Canadians have learned that Harper does not have to take a lesson from the Liberals, on respect for Parliament, and certainly not in respect to Canadian taxpayer's money, which Liberals presumed belonged to them, and distributed millions of dollars in brown paper bags to their friends and associates, as we found out in the sponsorship scandal. Canadians are also reminded that it was the Liberal party that tried to usurp the government of Canada through back room deals last December against the will of the Canadian people in a general election, and they have the chutzpah now to say they want to protect the Canadian parliamentary system - the nerve of some people's children. What Canadians have learned is that in power or out of power Liberals look after Liberals and their cronies and not Canadians.
Aren't the Liberals and their partisan political pundits very disingenuous to be critical of Harper, not only on his handling of Afghanistan, but also his regard for parliament, when they know fully well it was Harper who tried to be transparent and responsible to parliament, because his was the first government to set the example and hold a democratic vote in Parliament on the mission in Afghanistan - not once but twice. The Liberal government can not make that claim of democratic action, even though they are the government that got Canada into the war in Afghanistan, and now with the help of a compliant media, want to portray themselves to Canadians as the protectors of our parliamentary system in Canada - what hypocrites. Where are the media that will expose them for what they are?

  8. I will concede that facebook group membership says little about actual political commitment...

But in fairness, the proroguing of parliament is new news. Homework, for example, isn't. Complaints about homework predate the internet, the computer, the typewriter, etc. And not only is no homework a bipartisan issue... at least among school children... but it affects probably all facebook users around the world. Those of a certain age anyway.

I won't even get into slow walkers, polar bear riders, and people who want 100 000 people to say naming your kid megatron is a good idea.

Why care what 100 000 people say?

    Megatron is an awesome name.

    But I digress.

Facebook has 350 million users. How many are Canadian? How many are adults? How many vote? How many are eligible to vote? The groups you cite have a far larger pool of potential members to draw from.

But as I conceded at the beginning... facebook group membership on its own says nothing. Nothing interesting anyway. And you make a good point.

Whenever I see a poll that says ___% of Americans or Canadians or Europeans or Muslims or whatever believe ___________.... I always like to compare it to the number of people who believe Elvis is alive, and periodically impersonates himself in Vegas.

  9. A week from now this tempest in a teapot will have died down as the social networking crowd has moved on to some other topic of import like how high up is up or where does fire go when it goes out. You know, the usual trivialities posted by people who wish to share every detail of their vapid, boring, pointless lives.
