Ignatieff on Seal Meat: "It tastes meaty"

I had a good laugh today watching Ignatieff choke down some seal meat with a fake smile on his face while posing for the cameras. When they leaned in to ask him how it tasted, this literary pugilist reached deep into his arsenal of adjectives and said "it tastes meaty, even a little gamey". Excellent description Mike, I'll have to remember that one if anyone asks me how my food tastes in the future. Meat is meaty, just as bread is bready, even a little grainy. That popcorn I ate last night sure was popcorny. You could tell from his body language that he was not enjoying the food, but Gerry Byrne might have clubbed him over the head had he said it sucked.

I should clarify that I don't think it was wrong of Ignatieff to attend the seal luncheon, and I don't care if he lied about liking it. The whole experience was just awkwardly funny to watch and the description was stunningly lacking for a "best selling author"...I shouldn't say that, I have no proof that Iggy has ever sold any books. He prefers writing books about how great his lineage is, an obsession few normal people share.

PS: I almost feel like popcorny should be a real word. When it popped up in my spell check, I clicked "add to dictionary" as a combination of pop "in popular modern style" and corny "trite or sentimental".

Popcorny: being artifically trite or sentimental in popular modern style.

For use in a sentense: "at todays seal lunch, Mike Ignatieff behaved very popcorny".

  3. I didn't go too heavy on the puns? Most of them were intended.

  6. I ate seal meat once..

You know how people say 'I would do that again'?

    Seal, not so much..!

  7. Sorry dude - I have no idea what you're talking about... peanuty.

  8. Germans are more likely to enjoy defecating on each other in the bedroom, and it is often reflected in their adult films. Don't you watch South Park?

  9. I think 30 Liberals ate too much seal and felt sick today, and skipped the budget vote.

They should have stuck to chicken, it's a more natural choice for the Liberal diet.

  10. While I'm not opposed to slagging Iffy on a regular basis, this is trite.

Look up umami. Next look up gamey. Both are recognized in the culinary world. In other words, his description is perfectly valid with regards to grammar.

The umami part describes "meaty". It's the fifth taste sense on the tongue and is caused by high protein foods, meat, cheese, mushrooms...etc.

"Gamey" is hard to describe, but it is caused by a not so clean kill and/or the subsequent dressing. It can also be caused by a chef that is a little inexperienced with the meat. This is a common issue with hunters in the first sense, but much more common because of the second. Too many people think "steak" and "roast" are beef steaks and roasts. Totally different with different animals.

As this is the first day (will it be on the menu going forward?) I expect that the chef will improve the cooking...if the meat allows.

I don't know seal from [cough] cat, but with wild land animals slow cooking with low heat is the key.

    Cheers,

  11. I think you missed the sarcastic tone Lance. You take this too seriously. I thought coining the word "popcorny" would signal that this post was intended as humour.

  12. Hoo boy so seal meat is "meaty" that is very profound from Mr Ignatieff. He had to choke it down and pretend to enjoy it. I bet he wished he was still in the HOC so he could go ewwww that's not my job. LOL

  13. For this strange Ignatieff fellow who claims to be so well bred he sure broke the rules of good manners by talking with his mouth full at the seal meat event.
Quite boorish to watch. Does he do that in polite company too?

  14. Oh OK! Now I get it. It would have made more sense to me if you'd included corn... : )

  15. The episode of South Park where Cartman's mom gets into German porn is hilarious. Perhaps being 1/4 German myself I revert to the fecal humour too often, but the blog post was about things that potentially taste like shit.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is why I don't work for a newspaper... :)

  16. Can I use "popcorny" in a scrabble game?. Depending on a good placement, the word would give me 80+ points.

BTW, I would have thought seal meat would taste "fishy" as they come from where the fish dwell. Not so, eh?!

  17. Well, I don't think anyone's mentioned it here yet, but would it not have been the most ironic and simultaneously hilarious thing if Ignatieff had responded with, "It's a little Iffy!" ...and then looked down at his crotch.

Ba-dum-dum-ching! I call that Triple Entendre.

Clearly - bedtime. Good night all!

  18. You gotta give the guy some credit for trying.

I knew someone who worked at a hotel up north.
One night as he was closing up he said what is that fucking smell?
He found some Inuit men in a meeting room eating a raw seal.

If it was any good it would be on grocery store shelves.
You know, because there are a lot of them around.
    It's not.
    I haven't tasted it.
But I think those politicos are eating dogshit and being asked to smile about it while they do.

I'll stick with beef, chicken and bacon.

I stopped eating pork chops after a two week pork chop binge when we bought our first barbecue.
The taste of urea was enough to put me off of them.
All I could taste was piss.

They didn't used to taste like that.
    They just didn't.
