I am interested to know how many Canadians are excited for the upcoming World Cup of Soccer in South Africa. Globally this is a bigger sporting tournament than the Olympics, though I have long maintained that soccer is just an outdated relic of European colonialism. Hockey is by far the more entertaining sport but because of capital costs for entry and participation, the sport is exclusive. To play soccer all you need is something round. Personally I can't stand soccer, but I pay attention to it during the World Cup because it means so much to so many people across the planet.

The most fanatical soccer fans I ever knew were immigrants from Portugal, followed closely by the Italians, and South Americans,Argentina, Chile,Brazil.
ReplyDeleteSome of the Brits I knew were also pretty avid fans, but the Portuguese were REALLY rabid soccer fans, apt to scream invective at the referees, and even throw stones.
Apparently when Italy last won the World Cup, Commercial Drive in Vancouver was blocked by celebrating fans. Wish I'd have been there.

We watch both... my son plays competitive soccer all summer and competitive hockey all winter and into the spring. He is a defenceman in both sports and finds them to be complementary... how to work in a defined space, protect a goal, defend against an opposing attack, take possession of the ball/puck, set a drive through a neutral zone and move forward to support his teams attack. Learns to keep his head up, maintain field /ice awareness and look for plays and set up passes. The real Bonus is it keeps him fit all year round. A common set of skills that can be used in both sports.
