Guergis-gate: This Day in Question Period

Okay, I was expecting a little more emotion in the opposition's fervor on Guergis-gate during today's edition of Question Period. I suppose when you place the question sheet in Anita Neville's hands for reading, passion and emotion is beyond reasonable expectations. The Liberal MP struggled to even read the words Donolo likely wrote down on the piece of paper for her. Questions lose some of their "panache" when you hold the piece of paper right in front of your face and struggle to get the words out of your mouth. Well done Anita! I enjoyed it.

Then for the comic relief, there are none better than Jack Layton. He pulls out the Government's code of conduct and reads a clip on how Ministers are accountable to Canadians, and then he looks up and screams his question "why has this been referred to the RCMP!!!???" Let my get this straight Jack, should possible criminal allegations not have been handed to the RCMP? Would it have been a better course of action to circumvent our judicial process altogether and refer Helena instead to a lefty lynch mob on Parliament's front lawn? I'm curious to know how we can be more accountable than referring allegations to the Ethics Commissioner and the RCMP. Now that it has been referred to the judicial system, the Government is not permitted to comment on the nature of the allegations. The opposition knows this, which makes their delinquent demand for details ring a trifle hollow…

  1. Iceman, read BC BLUE blog to learn what the ethic Commission did.

  2. Might I also say that was about as docile as you'll ever see John Baird in Question Period. Docile John is very effective, whereas angry John is hit and miss.

I would be curious to know which opposition MP laughed out loud when John Baird said Canada was against nuclear proliferation.

  3. Jen, I stopped visiting BC Blue's site after he blocked me from his comment section, but judging from the caption he wrote about a different ethics complaint.

  4. Ya I surmised that Layton wanted some some sort of public committee lynch mob environment myself. I can't speak for him but what else could be inferred when you get the sense that the RCMP wasn't his preferred investigative venue?
Law and order ideals just seems to leave a bad taste in these guys mouths, they appear to think that THEY are the epitome of getting to the bottom of things....spare no expense or smear while the NDP get their man...guilty or not.

  5. Anita Neville is like watching a potted plant, or like watching paint dry. Boring, wow! I don't know how she keeps getting elected. There's no emotion, no passion whatsoever. I always laugh when I listen to her.

  6. The Opps, and media types like Tom Clark, are again insulting our intelligence. We understand the concept and importance of the seperation of powers, in the functioning of government.

And we also understand that if Harper revealed as much as the Opps and media wanted, then they would be screaming just as loudly that "Harper has compromised the criminal investigation, blah blah blah !"

They keep taking us for fools, and then wonder why their polling numbers and viewership numbers are in the tank.

The bottom line: Harper has taken the appropriate action. There is no need to know all the details of the allegations, at this point in time. All will be revealed in due course, by the appropriate authorities. There is no urgency in any of this moving along faster, especially since any elections are nowhere in sight.

  7. Have you noticed that the lame street media pretend they have a new tidbit which gives them the excuse to write the same column that has been appearing for the last week? It's disgusting watching this charade. When will the Libs learn to be more measured in their attacks. As for Tom Clark. He is an idiot and thank God I can't get access to him on my internet connection here in Florida.
The fact is the issue has been put in the hands of the RCMP and any attempt to compromise the investigation could result in Guergis being found innocent indeed if there is any criminal wrongdoing.

  8. The LibDippers fear the RCMP will NOT find grounds for an investigation.

And then they will never know what the (untrue) allegations were.
That would be a missed opportunity to make even bigger fools of themselves, eh.

These pyranna's wouldn't stop at learning the allegations, they would tear the info and informants, to the bone....
Good decision to not let that happen to the innocent.

  9. In conversation with Dan Matheson on CTV Newsnet this morning, Robert Fife gave us some revealing information. If there is any doubt that Fife considers himself an integral part of the opposition, he just clarified it himself in the statement when he said "we" as being an inclusive part of the opposition. Robert Fife is too experienced a journalist, to not select his words carefully, to give viewers the wrong impression, so we must conclude that what he said is what he meant - he had many opportunities to correct himself all morning if he had wished to do so since the report was carried numerous times. We can't assume this was a Freudian slip.

In regards to the Guergis affair and Question Period Dan Matheson asked Fife

Dan Matheson - "Did the opposition get any satisfaction yesterday out of the government - did they get any more information - were they stonewalled?

Robert Fife - "The only thing we got is that there was a third party that came to the Prime Minister with these allegations"
