Is Helena "too sexy for our Party?"

Do you think the media and chattering classes delight indulging in stories about good looking people over the less photogenic? The media are in the business of selling news, and sexy stories sell. When you compare the media response to Helena and Rahim's series of unfortunate events against serious news stories from around the planet, you could be seriously fooled by the measured overreaction. I first called for her resignation a month ago after watching her on TV where she appeared to me to be buckling under the duress from her personal life and subsequent media attention.

There's a reason that the paparazzi follow Britney Spears everywhere she goes, but nobody cares about Drew Carey. I think that average people enjoy watching the failure of beautiful people, and that this cultural phenomenon increased the magnitude of the story. I do feel sorry for Helena, and at no point did I ask for her expulsion from caucus. The more I learn about the Rahim Jaffer's life out of politics, the happier I am that he is no longer in politics. It would appear that his escapades might destroy his wife's political career.

Put a controversial headline under the picture of a pretty lady on a news website, and that will get a lot more clicks than a civil war in the Congo. The media reports the stories that attract eyeballs. Good looks can be a big benefit on the way up, but it can also expedite the fall from grace in the event of a mistake. I just wonder if her staffers will continue posting anonymous comments on my site now that she is under RCMP investigation…

This afternoon's blog post was brought to you by the song "I'm too sexy" by Right Said Fred.

  2. What on earth is going on with our parliamentarians? The Liberals are useless and the Tories are just about as bad. If this pack of sandbox spitball throwers is the best this country can come up with we are in real trouble. If Diogenes were to wander through the halls of parliament he would run screaming into the streets!

  3. Whatever Pl. I have never seen the Conservatives do to any one what the Liberals have done daily for 4 years.

The Liberal women don't come close to comparing to the Conservative woman in LOOKS, talent AND EDUCATION!
That is the question, is it not?

The Liberals have dated, antiquated windbags that put ALL women to shame, period. I'm ashamed and embarrassed for each one of them, pathetic.

  4. Yeah the media does, but the are plenty of good looking women, and photogenic men in the federal and provincial conservative movement. But for the Geurgis-Jaffer case, they had it coming.
    - A spouse using another spouses work email is unacceptable, as I cannot allow someone at my work to use my email.
    - Jaffer's influence pedaling allegations are troublesome, and must proceed in due course.
    - Jaffer losing his Edmonton seat put him the PM's bad books. From what we understand he did not attend to his constituents very well. That is in sharp contrast in Senator Fabien Manning, who tried his hardest to keep his seat in Avalon, up against the Danny Williams ABC campaign. Manning got promoted to Senator because he did what he could during the election. Jaffer married Geurgis the day after the election.
    - Geurgis' hissy fit in PEI, though not illegal, does show agorgance, and Conservative people are unfortunately held to a higher standard. And she broke that standard, because at the very least you must show your humility, and be attentive to general population, because they pay your (MPs) salary, pension, and perks of office.

Frankly these two do NOT pass the smell test. The media did its job and investigated. Now if it turns out through the investigation that the Star's article in false, then there is a legal recourse to correct it. But considering the character of Geurgis, she does NOT reflect the values and traits we would like to see in our MPs.

  5. "Too sexy for our Party"?

No. But what qualifications did Guergis have that made the Party consider her a viable candidate? She was a small business owner for six years, and a CA in an Ontario MPP's office for several years, so she should have been well versed in what it takes to live in the political fishbowl. But did anyone pay attention to her personality, except to be dazzled by her good looks?

After her airport fracas, I got the impression of a spoiled brat, used to people kowtowing to her.
Her experiences as "Miss Outback Ontario" probably further cemented the self-image of entitlement "because-I'm-special".

People are attracted to the "beautiful people", and often their lack of ability is overlooked in favour of their glamour. The MSM is like a bunch of teeny-boppers in their worship of whoever's the "hottie" of the day, and they DO love to see the Rich,Famous and Beautiful take a spectacular fall from grace. It's the mean spirited child in many of us, especially the MSM.

Helena Guergis and Tiger Woods have spent the last while being raked over the coals for their alleged sins, but Tiger has ability, in spades, to recover from being the latest victim of a voracious media.

I don't know if Helena does.

Maybe she should opt for the Jackie Kennedy way out.
