Gordon Campbell; The Sherriff of Nottingham

Today BC Liberal Premier Gordon Campbell announced his intention to run for a 4th term. For those of you east of the Rockies that don't already know, Campbell is widely considered by BC left wingers to be a right winger (while widely regarded by right wingers of being a douche). When the Social Credit Party collapsed under Vanderzaam, they were absorbed into the Liberal Party, leaving us with essentially a two party province, the NDP and the not NDP. The last time the NDP were in power, they nearly destroyed this province, leading to Ujjal Dosangh leaving provincial politics with the provincial NDP having two seats. BC right wingers damn near have license plates that say “je me souviens”, but they are talking about Glenn Clark and Ujjal, not the Plains of Abraham. The large majority of BC people who vote Conservative federally, vote Liberal provincially.

That's what we have here, and nearly everyone loathes Gordon Campbell. When he announced today his intention to seek a 4th term, 85% of the province was upset. Just listening to talk radio earlier in the day, a lot of Liberal supporters want a new leader, either that or a legitimate right wing party. The carbon tax pissed off a lot of people. Gord said that BC would not adopt an HST, then after he won his 3rd term, screw that we need the HST. Over 80% of British Columbia opposes this increase to our sales tax, where previously untaxed goods will now be sold with a surcharge. I have personally signed the petition to scrap the HST.

Right now, I am pissed off that Gordie is defying overwhelming public opinion, and expressing his intention to run for another term. Meanwhile, a lot of people on his side of the aisle are turning against him. I am sad to say that I voted for them a year ago despite my opposition to the carbon tax, because the alternative is Carol James (whom I have previously described as a Jim Henson acid trip gone horribly awry). But I promise that I will never again vote for a party with Gordon Campbell at its head. If only we were lucky enough to have Ed Stelmach.

  1. Ed Stelmach? Left of Gordon and a simpleton.
Iceman are you one of those that fell for Klein as a conservative? He never was you know, he increased the civil service in Alberta to the point that even the Fed civil service is smaller.
What we need here in BC is a Chris Christie, not a John Kerry clone like Stelmach.

  2. What's this I hear about Randy White, former Reform/Alliance MP, possibly leading the BC Conservative Party?

  4. Randy White has been tasked with conducting a "tactical review" or something like that, for the BC Conservative Party. Randy White has the ego for leadership, but not the skillset. He would turn off more people than he would attract.

I think Gordo has to say he's running again or else he would look like he was running scared from the Zalm and the HST. He'll quietly move along and hand off an epic election loss to someone else. Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell come to mind. I know the NDP sucks, but Campbell and his Liberals are arrogant liars. You can only say "who else are you going to vote for?" for so long before voters will answer that question in a way that you don't appreciate.
