Chretien: "the leader is always the best man for the job"

Among the many "pearls of wisdom" that have been bestowed upon us by former Prime Minister Jean Chretien over the years, "the leader is always the best man for the job" has to now rank among my all-time favourites. When a reporter prodded him on why he was endorsing Ignatieff, JC responded "because he's the leader" which felt like a thinly veiled jab at Paul Martin. It is no secret that JC thinks that Bob Rae would be a better leader, but in the spirit of the old wounds that have yet to heal from the Paul Martin uprising in JC's days; and being the leader is what qualifies the current puppet show to do the job? Granted the reporter did not ask the obvious follow up question: is a candidate who has never won a leadership convention a qualified choice to be leader of the party?

The problem Cons have with JC is sometimes he was just so everyday normal when a microphone was shoved in his face. I'm sorry..but thats pure JC gold right there.

  3. "Pure JC gold right there." Well it could be B.S. too. I live in farm country and we have lots of gold on them there fields.

In other words, Ignatieff is not necessarily the best man for the job, just that he is where he is. No endorsement at all.

Iceman -- Can you imagine any other Western democracy thinking that statement was a democracy or there being a "crisis" about whether census long forms should be voluntary or compulsory.

Strange, when I was an academic, we found results more "significant" when they were self-report.

I'm glad I took a month off I need the renewed sense of humour.

  4. I voted for Chretien (liberal), Sheila Copps and I believed him when he said he would kill the GST.

In 2004, I decided not to vote for Team Martin (liberal), but not until I was standing in the voting booth.

I cringed when the 'not a leader' attack ads came out. Dion is a good man. But he lived up to the attack ads.

Ignatieff is simply not qualified for the top job.
    He lacks... everything.

  5. Hey Wilson,

Given that you believed Chretien when he said he would kill the GST, it explains the election of 1993. But what about the next two elections?

I don't know why anyone would believe a Liberal promise.
Remember when Trudeau won an election against Stanfield by campaigning against wage and price controls?
He promptly reversed himself once back in office.
Remember when Trudeau brought down Clark because of an 18 cent a gallon gas tax?
Trudeau changed gallons to litres and then added a 13 cent a litre gas tax.
Or about fifty cents a gallon.

Newbie voters get a liberal mulligan.
But after that they should have learned their lesson.

Glad your not voting for the empty suit!
