Georges Laraque: Lizzy's New Deputy

A man who has taken thousands of bare knuckle punches to the head is now the deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada? This seems like an odd political play, but given that she has been busy trying to stomp out a mutiny within her party, I suppose it makes sense to bring in a goon on her flank to keep those detractors in line. I have always been a fan of Georges work on the ice, but repeatedly exchanging punches to the head over a long period of time hardly qualifies someone for political life. Joining the Green Party is one thing, but the deputy? That means theoretically if anything happens to Lizzy May, Georges would become the leader of a federal political party. If you have ever listened to this man speak about something important, the evidence of possible brain damage is quite apparent. He's almost like a francophone Rocky Balboa. It is virtually impossible to take thousands of bare knuckle punches to the face without sustaining some level of brain trauma.

I like you Georges, but not in politics. As a Conservative I am not concerned that this might be successful; rather I should want this celebrity appointment to attract more voters to the Green Party. Liberal and NDP voters are far more likely than Tories to defect to the Greens. Yet I have a strong suspicion that this is going to backfire on Elizabeth May.

  1. Rivard said he quickly realized the Green Party was well-intentioned but didn't have the resources necessary to develop the party in Quebec

She is running in a riding that already has environmentalists running for office.

She has overstayed her two year term and is trying to avoid the leadership review.

I like Debborah Donnelly, she is running in St. Paul's

Whether as a Naval Officer representing Canada overseas for over a decade, as an archaeologist working on culturally sensitive projects, or as an emergency management professional on the front lines of crisis, this value has always guided Debborah’s actions.

  2. It's really no less misguided than appointing Jacques Demers to the Senate.

But, really, is that what Elizabeth May wants Canadians to think? She's "no worse" than the individuals she hysterically denounces as the destruction of Canada?

  3. Georges may not have been the best heavyweight in the history of hockey tough guys, but he was pretty good at what he did, when he did it. Thousands of punches may have been thrown at his head, but I would bet on the low side of the amount that actually landed.

Georges mental capacity aside, this reeks of desperation. She has attached herself to Laraque like a parasite, hoping that his celebrity will wear off on herself. Just another day being Lizzy May.

  4. It’s a given that this character is going to be paid from the public purse.
So what are his qualifications for this job? Does he have any?

It’s so easy to spend money using credit versus spending money you’ve saved up. And then it’s a dozen times easier to spend money you’ve connived from the taxpayers that you don’t have to pay back. Our current rules allow these buggers to act like dirty rotten spoiled rich brats.

This is one of reasons to ditch ALL public financing of the political parties.

Just think of how all the political parties would change for the better if they had to earn all their income from Canadian citizens rather than the devious ways and means they now use.

This small change would lead to a huge and positive difference for Canada.
