Canada's New Natural Governing Party?

Does Canada have a new natural governing party? I know this is a term that Liberals delight in applying to themselves, but one has to wonder if they have are losing their grip on the moniker. They made the disastrous mistake of voting Stephanie Dion leader, followed by Ignatieff who was appointed without a leadership contest. The next guy in line is a former NDP Premier who is arguably one of the worst performing Premiers that our country has ever seen, a guy who prorogued the legislature 3 out 4 years during an economic crisis and then protested in the streets when our current government prorogued for the Olympics.

In the last 30 years, how many majority governments have the Liberals won against a united right? One single majority by Trudeau handed to him on a silver platter by Joe Clark. Jean Chretien only ever faced a divided Conservative Party.  To call the Liberals the natural governing party is not statistically accurate, unless you hop in a time machine and travel back 50 years.

  1. the danger is, of course, the lieberals will slip back in to power by harper-hating, cpc bashing, msm abetted, 24/7 (ala carville/kinsella), and then , with the public treasury in their control, continuously buy the electorate, pit region against region, all at the expense of the whole country

  2. But if we go back 50 years, why not 60? Then we'd be right where Lawrence Martin from the G&M thinks Harper is taking us...

  3. Liberals traded off their 'natural governing party' status for a coalition of losers.

    There's no going back.
The media and Lib supporters are resigned to the fact Libs can't get back into power anytime soon, without the Dippers.
They cling to the hope the LibDips can pull off enough seats to form a majority.

They made the choice to go all in, all left, on Dec 1, 2008.
Smooth talkin' Bob Rae killed the LPC, imo, exactly what he set out to do.

  4. At the exspense of the whole country. No doubt, but the liberals are not the liberals anymore they are overtaken by NDP and bloc in their new name brand 'COALITION' and through them, by them with the usual help from their media will lead canada to a place of 'no return'- gloomy-yes-the signs are all there.
Socialism mixed with Marxism with the liberals and media in toe will be the downfall of our great nation.
As you can see the way Layton is manipulating public by saying that 'the PM wants the manditory system remain in place in the 'Census Long Form' when in truth it not so. But Layton, knowing that the media will not contradict him for the sake of the PM continues to announce his plan of using Voluntary. not one reporter came out to correct Layton.

  5. Under Iggy, the Libs are pretty well forced to continue with their "big tent" strategy, and "visionary, progressive" narratives.

Early in his bus tour, and probably at every stop since then, Iggy pleaded for Dippers, progressives, Red Tories, etc etc to join him under the "Big Red Tent". But why should they ?

Voters on the "red/orange divide" know, (and will be reminded by us and Layton, using different rhetoric of course), that a coalition of the losers is going to happen, if the CPC does not have a majority.

Jack's message is obvious and powerful: Send more Dippers to Ottawa, so that we have more influence in the next Parliament, and will get more of our agenda in place.

It will be obvious, in the final week of the campaign, that the Libs are nowhere near getting more seats than us. It's just too hard to knock off incumbent MPs. Especially with a weak leader, and low profile opposition candidates, which the Libs have.

So their strategy is doomed. Flanagan's "war of attrition" (whereby the Libs run out of money), is going to kick back in, after the Libs spend around $16 million. Chretien is right about the merger, because he can see what a political bumpkin Iggy is. But it's way too late now.

  6. Look, it is much too soon to call the Conservatives the new "natural governing party of Canada." In fact, while I hope the Conservatives do win many more elections in the future, I hope bloggers and Conservatives in general never use that elitist phrase to describe our party.

Harper's Conservatives are constantly in the 30's and have only won two minority governments so far. Let's not get ahead of ourselves as we have a lot of work ahead of us, especially in rebuilding voter confidence after a bad couple months. Let's also not start talking about Ignatieff's successor until we have actually defeated him in the next election. We can never underestimate the Liberals or any party for that matter.

  9. If we are only going back to the 50s, that can't be so bad, considering there is a whole mob of muslims trying to take us back to the 7th century.
