The media who swarmed Stockwell Day today criticizing him for being alarmed about the rates of unreported crimes perhaps maybe should have done a little bit of research before venting their outrage. CBC Comedian Rick Mercer tweeted rickmercer: Stock Day makes my head hurt. The reports of unreported crime alarms him? Skit over. Somehow I don't think that Mr. Mercer realized when he tweeted that according to Statistics Canada, 90% of all sexual assaults in Canada go unreported. The fact that Stockwell Day is alarmed about that gives Rick Mercer a headache.

ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that all the reports by our MSM on Stockwell Day's press conference singled out crime and prisons. The press conference was called to provide info on the economy. The only entry I found about what he said with regard to the economy is from China.

First question: Is there any indication, any study, which will suggest that before my government spends a billion or two of my tax dollars that their effort will reduce crime?
Nope.
Second question: What was Stock referring to? He has confirmed he was referring to a StatsCan victimization survey which IN 2004 showed a 3% increase in ureported crime.
Third question: When were your stats collected? Current statistics show a drop in crime overall over the last 20 years. Your stats come from studies in 1993 and 1988.

RG: The statistic that 90% of sexual assaults are unreported comes from Statistics Canada. It isn't my statistic.
ReplyDeleteTry reading the actual Statscan study Iceman. It is 88% not 90% of all violent assualts that are not reported. Sexual assaults are lumped into this category. What the report states is that the reason a crime was not reported, was because a victim did not feel it was important or preferred to deal with it themselves.
