Conan Ratings Plummet

Late night host Conan O'Brien launched his new show this week, and a whopping 4.2 million people tuned in to watch his show where he mostly complained about his multi-million dollar golden parachute from NBC. 1.4 million of those viewers tuned out for the second show. Jay Leno averages 3.8 million viewers per show. Today's poll question; which late night talk show would your rather watch? I'm not a big fan of any late night show, but I find myself very annoyed with "Team Coco" who paint Conan as a victim and Leno as a villain. Leno had the #1 rated show in the genre, didn't want to retire, and NBC tried to force him to retire. Conan got the Tonight Show and bombed, then was paid $40 million dollars to leave. Why should Leno be forced to quit? As Jerry Seinfeld said in defense of Leno, you don't make #1 quit. He goes when he wants to go, like Jerry did. Conan is just a rich crying baby that is not getting sympathy. How many of his viewers have ever been paid several million dollars to be let go?

  1. Interesting side note: NBC would not pay severance costs to the technicians of Conan's Tonight Show team, so Conan paid a little over $1 million out of his own pocket to make sure they were happy.

I don't take sides in these kinds of things. What comes around goes around. Leno did it to get the Tonight Show and had it done to him once he got the show. I find Conan as annoying as he is funny but the truth is Conan's ratings were better than Jay's in the first two years of Jay's Tonight Show term, and they were on the upswing. Probably a dumb move to get rid of Jay in favour of Conan; probably a dumb move to get rid Conan to get Jay back (who has to be the most annoying cloying suck up of a host, no matter how much better his monologs and one liners may be).

  2. Jay Leno is scum. He announced he was retiring FIVE YEARS before Conan took over.

Conan spent 5 years planning, gave up his Late Night show and moved his entire staff of over 100 people from New York to LA. After only 7 months Leno's new show at 10 o'clock (right before Conan's show) totally bombed and was cancelled. Leno then decided he wanted his old show back leaving Conan nowhere to go. Conan refused to take his old show back and screw the new guy (Jimmy Falon) so he left. If you are wondering why NBC picked Leno over Conan it's only money. Leno had a 100 million contract to break and Conan only 40 million.
Conan has a right to be bitter, Leno should have retired gracefully like he said he was going to do and this wouldn't have happened.
