Who Benefited From Robocalls In Guelph?

There have been allegations of large scale "voter suppression" in the riding of Guelph in 2011, and the interesting question is who benefited the most from this alleged fraud? Of all the Liberals who ran in the last election, which candidate experienced the largest increase in popular vote? That's right, none other than Frank Valeriote in Guelph, who had 32% of the vote in 2008 and 43% in 2011, an 11% rise, the single largest increase of any Liberal in the country (while the party was plummeting nationally). Only 21 out of 308 Liberal candidates experienced a net gain (Central Nova doesn't count because they ran no candidate in 2008), and only 2 of those won their seat. So while 287 Liberals (93% of the party) experienced declines in popular vote, Valeriote hit a long home run with an 11% gain? Meanwhile in neighbouring ridings Cambridge and Wellington the Liberal vote fell 8% and 6% respectively. When you look at the statistics, Valeriote is the Barry Bonds of the Liberal Party.

Boy, if the Conservatives were trying to suppress the Liberal vote in Guelph, they sure did a phenomenally terrible job at it!

  3. Many are dismissing that the robocalls could have been done by a disgruntled Liberal. The arguments are that it would not have made sense for a Liberal to attack their own party -- but it does not have to make sense. Anger is frequently irrational and unjustified. So who among Liberals was an enemy of Valeriote? His major gains in percentage of support are peculiar.

  5. But the EC calls were also received by Conservatives. Plus the Liberals were at the fake polls to re-direct the voters to the right polls blaming the Conservative party...not the NDP party. Why not? Voters tore up their voting cards? Sounds like some staged occupy group to make the voters angry and change their votes?
Ignatieff was on his dying last legs in this election and the polls had the Liberal party in the gutter. Last ditch effort to save a Liberals desperate skin?

  6. Bob Rae had a good motive. After all, he himself had his votes suppressed when he wasn't allowed to run against Iggy.

  7. The biggest victim statistically is the Green Party, who fell from 21% to 6%, and the largest benefactor were the Liberals. The Greens lost 6000 voters, and the Liberals found 6000 voters. The Greens changed candidates. The outgoing guy was rumoured to be a leadership candidate, and I wonder how many campaign workers left with him. Many Greens in Guelph were upset when Elizabeth May recommended voters vote strategically to defeat Conservatives, and feel they could have won that seat.

The numbers suggest disgruntled Greenie defecting to the Liberals.

  8. The NDP vote was virtually unchanged in Guelph. They added 123 votes in 2011 from 2008.

    1. Probably due to the increase in votes cast by some 900,000 nationally.

  9. This in QP today said by Dean del Mastro...On April 30th at 1pm the Liberal leader was teaching Liberal workers how to use robocalls. 5 pm that afternoon the Liberal robocalls started flooding Guelph.
Liberal Frank Valeriote didn't just break the EC laws but also the CRT laws.
The NDP and Liberals will not hand over the lists of the phone numbers they used to make millions of calls costing millions of dollars.
NDP don't blow up over this in QP but SUPPORT their coalition buddies.

  12. Anonymous above is right... from the very start this has been an orchestrated smear campaign against the Conservatives by the Media Party... Libranos and the NDP, along with their foreign comrades and interests... of this I have no doubt.
